I have an overwhelming need to share this with you all. Its about what
I hate most about newsgroups . . . . control freaks like netnannies
and net cops and here is why.

They are like when a little bit of shite gets stuck just inside yer
rectum not far enough down that you can squeeze it either in or out.
It just lies there, you feel it but can do nought about it. It just
sits there and irritates the hell out of you. The only effect is the
production of irritation nothing else. That is really what they are
like. They achieve nothing else. The trolls are still there!!

Shite in yer rectum will eventually be resolved. Netnannies and
netcops are always there. The name and individual may change but there
is always some shit baiting and upsetting harmless trolls. The effect
is to give the troll a mission in life. Look at the uk.local hierarchy
at the moment, yorkshire, birmingham and essx in particular. Ruined
for the average poster. The majority of groups are empty, except for
troll droppings, spam and the odd genuine post!!!

What amazes me is that some of the netnannies not only boast about
reporting contributors to their ISP but attempt to get other people
to do the same. This gives the troll an extra boast of "adrenaline".
Its all beyond me!

Maybe I am too sensitive a guy.

And by the way the chimney could be a crematorium. A cut price one,
buy one get one free.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Derek

I could be glib and say that the chimney was tther to take smoke away
<G>.

Quite simply it is a left over from the heavy industrry that used to
be on that site - it could be demolished but that comes a cost and the
subsequent occupants of the site have steared clear of paying for
that. Anyway, it makes a good advertising location for Tesco's.

it was used as advertising for the auction room that was there too
wasn't it? I did think about giving tesco a ring or something, but
would probably get some silly bint who didn't even know which end of
the phone to talk into :O)

Before the car auctions, the site was owned by GUS where they had the
biggest furniture manufacturing factory in Britain/Europe/Universe. At the
West end of the factory (where the chimbley is) was their own wood seasoning
unit which I believe used some in-house process system, involving steam and
noxious liquids, for speedy seasoning. I visited the factory, which is still
the outer shell of Tesco's, back in ~1957 and very impressive it was.
Later the site was taken over by a pale imitation of Formica (Arborite
springs to mind)

My memory of the area isn't that good. When we visited while living in
Yorkshire my sister was working for MFI but the entrance was round
there, not at the front as it is now, and I'm sure it was nearer to
where tesco is... but my memory is not good now. Am I imagining
things?

Had a look at the old maps http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and I see that the
'coast road' stopped shortly West of Billy Mill. However there are the old
colliery lines which ran just west of what is now Norham Road and some mine
workings in that area so engine houses may be a possibility.

I fancy I'm talking to myself here, but the chimney shows up beautifully on
Google Earth and the satellite photos on Google maps and you can see how
close the railway line is.

It's now a 'Waggonway" ie public footpath that runs from Wallsend Road just
North of Percy Main station to Middle Engine Lane not far from the Shiremoor

heh. We're not allowed to pronounce Chiremoor. As we are still have a

granddaughter used to yell 'it's Shy-a-moo-ah!'

After the war Norham Road Industrial Estate once housed the Ministries of
this that and the other. They were heated by a boiler system which sent
steam in pipes all around the various buildings. The Tesco chimney was part
of the boiler house for that system.
